Survival Phrases Lesson 4 - Basic Hebrew Greetings
Today, we'll cover basic greetings for the appropriate time of the day. As there are quite a few to cover, let's jump right in.
In Hebrew, we can use the phrase שָׁלוֹם, Shalom as a universal greeting. We use it both when greeting and when parting. Let's say it slowly now, שָׁלוֹם, Shalom. Let's break it down by syllable, שָׁלוֹם, Shalom. Now, let's hear it once again, שָׁלוֹם, Shalom.
In Hebrew, "Good Morning" is בֹּקֶר טוֹב, Boker tov. Let's break it down by syllable, בֹּקֶר טוֹב, Boker tov. Now, let's hear it once again, בֹּקֶר טוֹב, Boker tov. The first word, בֹּקֶר, Boker means "morning." Let's say that word slowly now, בֹּקֶר, Boker. טוֹב, Tov, which in Hebrew is "good," follows this. בֹּקֶר טוֹב, Boker tov.
In Hebrew, "Good afternoon" is צָהֳרַיִם טוֹבִים, tzahoraim tovim. Let's break it down by syllable, צָהֳרַיִם טוֹבִים, tzahoraim tovim. Now, let's hear it once again, צָהֳרַיִם טוֹבִים, tzahoraim tovim. The first word צָהֳרַיִם, Tzohoraim means, "afternoon." Let's break down this word and hear it one more time, צָהֳרַיִם, Tzohoraim. טוֹבִים, Tovim follows this, which in Hebrew is "good."
Finally, in Hebrew, "good evening" is עֶרֶב טוֹב, Erev tov. Let's break it down by syllable, עֶרֶב טוֹב, Erev tov. The first word עֶרֶב, Erev means, "evening." Let's break down this word and hear it one more time, עֶרֶב, Erev. טוֹב, Tov follows this, which in Hebrew is "good."
Ok, to close out today's lesson, we would like you to practice what you have just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it out loud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so בְּהַצְלָחָה, Behatzlacha! which means "Good luck!" in Hebrew.
"Hello and Goodbye." - שָׁלוֹם, Shalom.
"Good morning." - בֹּקֶר טוֹב, Boker tov.
