Survival Phrases Lesson 54 - The Weather |
Whether or not the weather will cooperate is an important issue on which many plans are made and canceled. It can happen sometimes that you are planning a long trip and you want to be sure that your walks and your tours around Israeli cities will be safe and dry! In this lesson, we will cover a phrase that will help you finalize your plans if they depend on the weather. |
In Hebrew, "what will the weather be tomorrow?" is ?מַה יִהְיֶה מֶזֶג הַאֲוִיר מָחָר, Ma ihiye mezeg ha'avir makhar? Let's break it down by syllable, ?מַה יִהְיֶה מֶזֶג הַאֲוִיר מָחָר, Ma ihiye mezeg ha'avir makhar? Now, let's hear it once again, ?מַה יִהְיֶה מֶזֶג הַאֲוִיר מָחָר, Ma ihiye mezeg ha'avir makhar? The first word Ma means "what." Let's hear this word one more time, מַה, Ma. Then, we have the word יִהְיֶה, iihiye, which in English means "will be." Let's hear this word one more time, יִהְיֶה, iihiye. Next, we have the words מֶזֶג הַאֲוִיר, Mezeg ha'avir, which in English is "weather." Finally, we have מָחָר, makhar, which means "tomorrow." Let's break it down by syllable and hear it one more time, מָחָר, makhar. All together, we have ?מַה יִהְיֶה מֶזֶג הַאֲוִיר מָחָר, Ma ihiye mezeg ha'avir makhar? Literally, this means "What will the weather be tomorrow?" |
Let's go over the possible answers. In Hebrew, "It will rain" is יִהְיֶה גָּשׁוּם, ihiye gashum, Let's break it down by syllable, יִהְיֶה גָּשׁוּם, ihiye gashum. Now, hear it one more time, יִהְיֶה גָּשׁוּם, ihiye gashum. It will be sunny" is יִהְיֶה שִׁמְשִׁי, ihiye shimshi, Let's break it down by syllable, יִהְיֶה שִׁמְשִׁי, ihiye shimshi. Now, let's hear it once again, יִהְיֶה שִׁמְשִׁי, ihiye shimshi. The first word ihiye means "it will be." Let's hear it one more time, יִהְיֶה, ihiye. Finally, we have שִׁמְשִׁי, shimshi, which is the Hebrew word for "sunny." All together, we have יִהְיֶה שִׁמְשִׁי, iihiye shimshi, which literally means "It will be sunny." |
In case you're somewhere where the weather can change very quickly, you can ask, "What will the weather be today?" ?מָה יִהְיֶה מֶזֶג הָאֲוִיר הַיּוֹם, Ma ihiye mezeg ha'avir hayom? Let's break it down by syllable, ?מָה יִהְיֶה מֶזֶג הָאֲוִיר הַיּוֹם, Ma ihiye mezeg ha'avir hayom? Now, let's hear it once again, ?מָה יִהְיֶה מֶזֶג הָאֲוִיר הַיּוֹם, Ma ihiye mezeg ha'avir hayom? As you can see, we have the same pattern of the phrase we have previously seen. ?מָה יִהְיֶה מֶזֶג הָאֲוִיר, Ma ihiye mezeg ha'avir? Literally, this means, "What will the weather be?" Then, we have הַיּוֹם, Hayom "today" in place of מָחָר, makhar "tomorrow." Let's break this word down and hear it one more time, הַיּוֹם, Hayom. All together, we have ?מָה יִהְיֶה מֶזֶג הָאֲוִיר הַיּוֹם, Ma ihiye mezeg ha'avir hayom? This literally means, "What will the weather be today?" |
Ok, to close out today's lesson, we would like you to practice what you have just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it out loud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so !בְּהַצְלָחָה, Behatzlacha! which means "Good luck!" in Hebrew. |
