Survival Phrases Lesson 55 - What Time Is It? |
No matter where you are, you will always have some place to be! In this lesson, we'll look at a question that will give you the tools to ask how much time you have left to get there. We'll also give you the tools to understand the answer! |
In Hebrew, "What is the time?" is ?מַּה הַשָּׁעָה, Ma hasha'ah? Let's break it down by syllable, ?מַּה הַשָּׁעָה, Ma hasha'ah? Now, let's hear it once again, ?מַּה הַשָּׁעָה, Ma hasha'ah? The first word מַּה, Ma means "what." Let's break down this word and hear it one more time, מַּה, Ma. Next, we have הַשָּׁעָה, Hasha'a, which in English is "the hour." All together, we have ?מַּה הַשָּׁעָה, Ma hasha'ah? Literally, this means "What is the time?" |
Let's go over hours here. "Hour" in Hebrew is שָּׁעָה, Sha'a. However, you will never hear this word while asking for the time. When talking about (hour) o'clock, you just have to say the number and that's it. |
1 o'clock - אַחַת, Akhat |
2 o'clock - שְׁתַּיִם, Shtaim |
3 o'clock - שָׁלוֹשׁ, Shalosh |
4 o'clock - אַרְבַּע, Arba |
5 o'clock - חָמֵשׁ, Khamesh |
6 o'clock - שֵׁשׁ, Shesh |
7 o'clock - שֶׁבַע, Sheva |
8 o'clock - שְׁמוֹנֶה, Shmone |
9 o'clock - תֵּשַׁע, Tesha |
10 o'clock - עֶשֶׂר, Eser |
11 o'clock - אַחַת עֶשְׂרֵה, Akhat esre |
12 o'clock - שְׁתֵּים עֶשְׂרֵה, Shteim esre |
Let's cover how to answer the question ?מַּה הַשָּׁעָה, Ma hasha'ah? in Hebrew now! First, you answer הַשָּׁעָה, Hasha'a. and then the time. Let's hear it one more time, Hasha'a. "It's six o'clock" in Hebrew is הַשָּׁעָה שֵׁשׁ, Hasha'a shesh. Let's break it down by syllable, הַשָּׁעָה שֵׁשׁ, Hasha'a shesh. Now, let's hear it one more time, הַשָּׁעָה שֵׁשׁ, Hasha'a shesh. |
The first word הַשָּׁעָה, Hasha'a means "the time." Then, you have the time, which is the number שֵׁשׁ, Shesh, "six o'clock." All together, we have הַשָּׁעָה שֵׁשׁ, Hasha'a shesh. |
Let's go over minutes now. "Minutes" in Hebrew is דַּקּוֹת, Dakot. Let's break it down by syllable, דַּקּוֹת, Dakot. In Hebrew, first you say the number for "hours" followed by the number of minutes. |
For example, "It's 3:20" in Hebrew is הַשָּׁעָה שָׁלוֹשׁ וְעֶשְׂרִים, Hasha'a shalosh ve'esrim. "It's 5:55" in Hebrew is הַשָּׁעָה חָמֵשׁ חֲמִשִּׁים וְחָמֵשׁ, Hasha'a khamesh khamishim vekhamesh, "It's 8:34" in Hebrew is הַשָּׁעָה שְׁמוֹנֶה שְׁלוֹשִׁים וְאַרְבַּע, Hasha'a shmone shloshim vearba. |
Even Hebrew has words for the set times of the day: |
"Midday" in Hebrew is צָהֳרַיִם, Tsahara'im. |
"Midnight" is חֲצוֹת, Khatsot. |
Lastly, "quarter" in Hebrew is רֶבַע, Reva. Therefore, "It's 2:15" in Hebrew can also be שְׁתַּיִם וַרֶבַע, Shtaim vareva. |
Ok, to close out today's lesson, we would like you to practice what you have just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it out loud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so !בְּהַצְלָחָה, Behatzlacha! which means "Good luck!" in Hebrew. |
"What time is it?" - ?מַּה הַשָּׁעָה, Ma hasha'ah? |
"It's 3:20." - הַשָּׁעָה שָׁלוֹשׁ וְעֶשְׂרִים, Hasha'a shalosh ve'esrim. |

"Midday" - Tsahara'im. |
"Midnight" - Khatsot. |
