Yaara: Tipping is a common practice in Israel. In restaurants and cafes, the average tip is between 12 and 15%.
In most restaurants the staff prefers tips in cash, and some places don't even have the option to leave a tip by card—so remember to take some cash with you when you go to a restaurant or cafe, even if you plan on paying by card.

Outro

Eric: And that’s all for this lesson. Don’t forget to check out the lesson notes, and we’ll see you in the next lesson!
Yaara: להתראות

Listeners! What would you say if someone gave you the wrong change?

Dear Jim McRae,

Thanks for posting your great feedback and question!

The letter ר in Hebrew is pronounced a little bit like the Spanish R, and not like L. This is, however, a typical hearing mixup and it may take a while for one's ears to get used to the unfamiliar sound...

You can try to slow down the speed and listen to the pronunciation again, perhaps it will be easier to isolate the sound that way 👍

I hope that helps :)

Sincerely,

Roi

Shalom. I'm enjoying the lessons and I can see some progress being made. One question though: I see efshar and how it's spelt but I hear Yaraa saying efshal. Is the letter r pronounced as an L? Thank you for your time.

Hi Jose,

Thank you for posting your questions.

In this case (asking for the bill) there's nothing wrong with saying "the bill" as well. Both versions are correct and acceptable...

The usage of את + word (for example "חשבון") is usually written as "ת'חשבון", but note that it's only used in the spoken language. This is a modern abbreviation that is not "approved" by the Hebrew language academy.

I hope that helps :)

Best,

Roi

shalom

in the first sentence, why you dont use the article ה-חשבון, since he´s asking for his bill in particular.? another tip that i learned is that i can connect the following two words in one

את החשבון = תה-חשבון

pls. excuse me if i wrote it bad... i hope you can catch the idea...

best

Hi Orsi,

Thanks for commenting.

This is indeed the right solution to our question👍

One could say this in other ways too, such as: "סליחה, יש טעות בעודף" ("excuse me, there's a mistake in the change").

Yours,

Roi

Shalom Roi,

On the last line-No need to return the change. If I put "et" and "h" in for "the" would it be incorrect? לא צריך להחזיר את העודף Also if you are speaking to a female" need" would become tsricha? This isn't an expression that is fixed?

By the way, sometimes I do not click the button that says respond to my e-mail by mistake. If you see an e-mail from me please respond, like in Lesson 24, no one has commented. Thanks.

Thank you Roi for your encouragement. I think the second half of your comment was not for me but for Mval.

Hi Shelly,

Thanks for posting!

Good work on your translation!

"Need" - צריך is a verb in Hebrew, as in הוא צריך לאכול - he need's to eat.

Yours,

Roi

Hi!

I am thankfull for the teacher giving a syntaks explanation of each word in dialog, but I think the word "need", the hebrew word "צריך" is a noun not a adjectiv in this context. Am I right? Is it OK with you that I pin point things like this?

Best regards

Shelley

Excuse me but I think that the change is not correct. סליחה אבל אני הושבת שהעודף הוא לא נכון
