POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Sherah: When I first came to Israel, I was surprised by the fact that there are so many strip malls here. |
Amir: There certainly are a lot - in some areas it seems like they’re around every corner! |
Sherah: Most strip malls are made up of a grocery store as the main store, surrounded by other smaller stores. |
Amir: The other stores are usually clothing stores, shoe stores, toy stores, household stores or hardware stores. |
Sherah: Every strip mall has a different mix of stores. |
Amir: Most of the stores in the strip malls are ones you can also find in indoor malls. |
Sherah: And most larger Israeli cities will have at least one indoor mall. |
Amir: They also usually have a grocery store in them, which is something you don’t often find in the US. |
Sherah: No, that’s true, we don’t usually have grocery stores in our malls. |
Amir: Indoor malls also have smaller, boutique type stores in them, so if you’re looking for something specific, that’s the place to go. |
Sherah: Oh, and a tailor too! If you need something made for you, you many indoor malls have a tailor and a shoe cobbler. |
Amir: Indoor malls are also nice places to go in the summer because they’re air conditioned. |
Sherah: Okay, now onto the vocab. |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Sherah: Let's take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase is.. |
Amir: כרטיס מועדון |
Sherah: meaning "club card". The first word in this phrase is כרטיס and it means “card” or even “ticket”. |
Amir: The second word in the phrase is מועדון meaning “club”. |
Sherah: You also use this word when you’re talking about clubs for children and for seniors. |
Amir: A כרטיס מועגון or a “club card” is a common marketing tool used in many Israeli stores. |
Sherah: They give you an extra discount and sometimes you can get a big bonus on your birthday. |
Amir: Other phrases that use the word כרטיס are כרטיס אשראי or “credit card” and כרטיס ביקור which means “business card”. |
Sherah: Can you give us an example using כרטיס מועדון? |
Amir: Sure. For example, you can say.. יש לך כרטיס מועדון שלנו? |
Sherah: ..which means "Do you have our club card?" The next word is.. |
Amir: עונה |
Sherah: meaning "season" |
Sherah: This word can refer to the seasons of the year or season of life. |
Amir: The plural of עונה is עונות. |
Sherah: If you want to say “the seasons of the year”, you would say עונות השנה. |
Amir: In the dialogue, the sale Hadas was talking about was for סוף העונה or “the end of the season”. |
Sherah: This is a phrase you’ll hear a lot in advertisements, especially on the radio. |
Amir: Another phrase that uses עונה is בעונתו meaning “in due time”. |
Sherah: Can you give us an example with the word עונה ? |
Amir: Sure. For example, you can say.. קר לי בעונת החורף |
Sherah: ..which means "I’m cold in the winter season." Okay, now onto the grammar. |
Lesson focus
|
Sherah: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to use the past tense. In Hebrew, the past tense is constructed with a verb stem and suffixes that attach to the stem. |
Amir: There are nine different forms in the past tense in Hebrew. |
Sherah: And each of the seven verb groups has a different form for the verb stem, so you can recognize what verb group the verb belongs to by their verb stem. |
Amir: The suffixes stay the same for all seven verb groups. |
Sherah: For instance, no matter what verb group the verb belongs to, the ending for “I” or אני is always תי- |
Amir: And the ending for “we” or אנחנו is always נו-. |
Sherah: There are two basic groups of conjugations in the past tense. |
Amir: That’s right. There are the third person conjugations that require the use of a pronoun in the sentence. These are for הוא, היא, הם and הן |
Sherah: And then there are the first and second person conjugations, which don’t require the use of a pronoun. |
Amir: These conjugations reflect the form of the pronoun. |
Sherah: Because of that, the pronoun is understood from the structure of the conjugation. |
Amir: Our first sample sentence from the dialogue is שמעתי ברדיו שיש מבצא סוף עונה בחנות הזאת meaning “I heard on the radio that there is an end of season sale at this store”. |
Sherah: The first word in the sentence is שמעתי and it comes from the verb לשמוע and means “I heard”. |
Amir: This is conjugated the same for both a male speaker and a female speaker. |
Sherah: For this word, the verb stem is שמע and the suffix is תי-. |
Amir: There’s no need for the pronoun אני because we understand this is the pronoun from שמעתי. |
Sherah: Using it would be redundant. |
Amir: Later in the dialogue, Hadas says לא הבנתי מה המבצא |
Sherah: She tells the clerk she didn't understand what the sale is. |
Amir: Again, this is the first person conjugation הבנתי and הבנ is the verb stem and תי- is the suffix. |
Sherah: As with the first sample sentence from the dialogue, this conjugation doesn't require the use of a pronoun. |
Amir: So, that’s the basic foundation for conjugating verbs in the past tense, specifically in the first person singular past tense. |
Sherah: Let’s hear some samples sentences using the past tense, first person singular. |
Amir: The first sentence is הבנתי את השיעור. |
Sherah: This means “I understood the lesson.” |
Amir: The second sentence is שמעתי צילצול טלפון. |
Sherah: Which means “I heard the telephone ring.” |
Amir: The last sentence is דיברתי עם חנה אתמול. |
Sherah: This means “I talked to Hanna yesterday.” |
Outro
|
Sherah: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye! |
Amir: תודה |
