INTRODUCTION
Sherah: Hi everyone, and welcome back to HebrewPod101.com. This is Beginner Season 1 Lesson 8 - Which Delicious Israeli Food Will You Choose? Sherah Here.
Amir: שלום I'm Amir.
Sherah: In this lesson, you’ll learn about the Hif'il verb group. The conversation takes place at a restaurant.
Amir: It's between Hadas and Michael.
Sherah: The speakers are in a casual setting, so they’ll be using informal Hebrew. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.

Michael: I love pasta. Is there pasta on the menu?
Hadas: They have pizza but I don’t see pasta.
Michael: I don't like pizza. What do you like to eat?
Hadas: I like meat. They have a steak. This is what I'm ordering.
Michael: Steak? You have good taste.
Hadas: Yes. Did you decide what you’re ordering?
Michael: Yeah, I also love salad, so I’m ordering a salad with chicken.

Sherah: If you’re looking for a restaurant rich in history, check out Cafe Batya in Tel Aviv/
Amir: The restaurant was established in 1941 before the founding of the State of Israel.
Sherah: It was a popular place for people to eat even back in the early days.
Amir: Many famous politicians, soldiers, artists and authors have eaten there over the years.
Sherah: They serve traditional, Eastern European Jewish food.
Amir: You can find old-style dishes like knedelach, gefilte fish and chopped liver.
Sherah: Like the kind of dishes you would eat during Jewish holidays.
Amir: The founders, Batya and her husband, started the restaurant from nothing.
Sherah: That’s right, she had worked in restaurants before but never run one.
Amir: In the beginning, they would bike to the shuk, or outdoor market, to get a few veggies and bones for soup.
Sherah: They didn't have much money, and things like spices were hard to come by.
Amir: They just worked with what they had using the recipes they learned growing up, and it grew into a very popular restaurant.
Sherah: Okay, now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Sherah: Let's take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first פphrase is..
Amir: למות מרעב
Sherah: meaning "to die from hunger". In the beginning of the dialogue, Hadas states that she’s dying of hunger.
Amir: She says, אני מתה מרעב.
Sherah: This phrase is constructed the same way and means exactly the same thing as in English.
Amir: The phrase begins with אני or “I”
Sherah: This is followed by the verb למות meaning “to die”. In the dialogue, it’s conjugated in the feminine singular because Hadas is a woman and she’s speaking in the first person.
Amir: The last two words are -מ meaning “from” and רעב meaning “hunger”.
Sherah: Can you give us another example using this word?
Amir: Sure. For example, you can say.. לא אכלתי הבוקר, אני מת מרעב.
Sherah: ..which means "I haven’t eaten since the morning, I’m dying of hunger." Okay, what's the next word?
Amir: תפריט
Sherah: meaning "menu". This word has the same root as the verb לפרט meaning “to specify” or “to give in detail”.
Amir: That makes sense because that’s exactly what a menu is.
Sherah: Right, it’s details about the food you can order at that restaurant.
Amir: Another noun that shares this root is פירוט.
Sherah: This means “detailing”.
Amir: So now you know that when you ask for a menu in Hebrew, you are actually asking for an itemized account of what you can get.
Sherah: Can you give us an example using this word?
Amir: Sure. For example, you can say.. אפשר לקבל תפריט באנגלית
Sherah: .. which means "Is it possible to receive a menu in English?” Okay, now onto the grammar.

Lesson focus

Sherah: In this lesson you will learn to discuss a food preferences. In previous lessons, we introduced you to the basic structure of the hif’il verb group.
Amir: Hif’il verbs can express ordinary actions like other verb groups.
Sherah: But they can also express causative actions.
Amir: Causative actions are actions that cause someone or something to act.
Sherah: These verbs are usually followed by the preposition את.
Amir: A good way to see how they express causative action is by looking at a pa’al verb and a hif’il verb with the same root.
Sherah: The pa’al verb we want to use is לאכול, a very common verb used to say “to eat” in Hebrew.
Amir: An example sentence with the verb would be הוא אוכל עם הילד שלו.
Sherah: This means “he’s eating with his child”.
Amir: When this root is used in the hif’il verb group, it becomes להאכיל and this means “to feed someone or something”.
Sherah: Or you could think of it like “causing someone to eat”.
Amir: An example of this verb would be הוא מאכיל את הילד שלו
Sherah: And this means “he’s feeding his child”.
Amir: So, getting back to our dialogue, Hadas used a hif’il verb when she said זה מה שאני מזמינה
Sherah: This means “This is what I’m ordering.” She uses the feminine singular form since she is speaking in the first person.
Amir: Later in the dialogue, Michael uses the same verb when he says אז אני מזמין סלט עם עוף
Sherah: Or in English, “so, I’m ordering a salad with chicken.”
Amir: This was in the masculine singular form, since Michael is now speaking in the first person.
Sherah: So let’s go through all four forms in the present tense. First is the masculine singular:
Amir: מזמין
Sherah: next is the feminine singular:
Amir: מזמינה
Sherah: and the masculine plural:
Amir: מזמינים
Sherah: and feminine plural
Amir: מזמינות
Sherah: The last sentence of the dialogue has two hif’il verbs in it - מזמין and החלטת.
Amir: The sentence Hadas says is החלטת מה אתה מזמין “did you decide what you’re ordering?”
Sherah: The verb החלטת is in the past tense and means “did you decide?”
Amir: The infinitive is להחליט.
Sherah: Before we go, let’s give our listeners some sample sentences with these verbs.
Amir: Sure, the first is הם מזמינים בלונים למסיבה.
Sherah: This means “they’re ordering balloons for the party.”
Amir: Next is: הוא מאכיל את הילד שלו.
Sherah: Or “he’s feeding his child”.
Amir: Last is: האמא מחליטה לנקות את הבית.
Sherah: Meaning, “the mother is deciding to clean the house.”
