Lesson Transcript

Hi everyone! I'm Alisha.
Welcome to Conversational Phrases!
We've found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you'll use in real conversations.
In this lesson, you'll learn conversational phrases to answer the question, "What are you doing?" After watching this video, you'll be able to answer this question and tell someone something about what you're writing.
Now, let's take a look at some conversational phrases!
Listen to the dialogue.
מה אתה עושה?
(Ma ata ose?)
אני כותב את היומן שלי.
(Ani kotev et ha-yoman sheli.)
Once more with the English translation.
מה אתה עושה?
(Ma ata ose?)
“What are you doing?”
אני כותב את היומן שלי.
(Ani kotev et ha-yoman sheli.)
“I'm writing my journal.”
First of all you'll need to learn how to say “What are you doing?”
That's:
מה אתה עושה?
(Ma ata ose?)
Listen to it again:
מה אתה עושה?, מה אתה עושה?
(Ma ata ose?, Ma ata ose?)
This Hebrew sentence literally translates as “What you doing?”
But it means “What are you doing?”.
Now, how do you answer this question?
The pattern is:
אני כותב את [object].
(Ani kotev et [object].)
This Hebrew sentence literally translates as “I write [object].”
But it means “I'm writing [object].”
For example:
“I'm writing my journal.”
אני כותב את היומן שלי., אני כותב את היומן שלי.
(Ani kotev et ha-yoman sheli., Ani kotev et ha-yoman sheli.)
