Hey, guys! Welcome to Hebrew Weekly Words. My name is Yaara and today, we’re going to talk about Family |
(mishpakha) |
1. |
(ima) “mother” |
(le'ima sheli kor-im Ayelet.) |
“My mother's name is Ayelet.” |
I can say |
(ima sheli) “my mother” and this is also how we call mothers |
(ima) like “mom” or “mommy”. The more formal word is |
אם |
(im) but we don’t use it when we speak. |
2. |
(aba) “father” |
(aba sheli gavoha meod.) |
“My father is very tall.” |
The formal word is |
אב |
(av) but again when speaking in non-formal language, we say |
(aba). |
3. |
בת |
(bat) “daughter” |
בת |
(bat) is “daughter” and it’s also “”girl” like when you ask if it’s a boy or a girl, |
(ze ben o bat?) |
(ha'bat shela bat shalosh.) |
“Her daughter is three years old.” |
I just realized it’s a funny word when you speak English, |
בת |
(bat) but yeah. |
4. |
בן |
(ben) “son” or a “boy” |
(ha'ben shelo mamash dome lo.) |
“His son looks a lot like him.” |
5. |
(savta) “grandmother” |
It’s spelled |
(savta) but most of the times, you hear |
(safta). This is how children say it at least, |
(safta) |
(savta sheli gara ba'kfar.) |
“My grandmother leaves in a village.” |
Okay, thank you so much for watching. We talked about the very Israeli subject of “Family” |
(mishpakha). Leave us any comment below and don’t forget to check out the site. See you next time! |
