Survival Phrases Lesson 17 - Counting 10-100 |
Today, we're going to continue with counting as we cover numbers 11-100. |
Let's just quickly review 0 to 10. |
Please note that counting things in Hebrew can be a bit tricky as objects in Hebrew have gender. |
First, we will list the masculine form of the numbers and then the feminine form. |
Number |
Male/Female |
0 |
efes - אֶפֶס |
1 |
echad/achat - אֶחָד/אַחַת |
2 |
shnayim/shtayim - שְׁנַיִם/שְׁתַּיִם |
3 |
shlosha/shalosh - שְׁלוֹשָׁה/שָׁלוֹשׁ |
4 |
arba'ah/arba - אַרְבָּעָה/אַרְבַּע |
5 |
khamisha/khamesh - חֲמִישָׁה/חָמֵש |
6 |
shisha/shesh - שִׁשָּׁה/שֵׁשׁ |
7 |
shiv'ah/sheva - שִׁבְעָה/שֵׁבַע |
8 |
shmona/shmone - שְּמוֹנָה/שְּמוֹנֶה |
9 |
tish'ah/tesha - תֵּשַׁע/תִּשְׁעָה |
10 |
asara/eser - עֲשָׂרָה/עֶשֶׂר |
In Hebrew, counting from 11-20 is also quite straightforward, so let's jump right in. |
First, we will list the masculine form of the numbers and then the feminine form. |
Number |
Male/Female |
11 |
20 |
esrim - עֶשְׂרִים |
As you may have noticed, you just add עָשָׂר/עֶשְׂרֵה, Asar/esre to the number you want to say. However, when counting from 11-19, the numbers before the עָשָׂר/עֶשְׂרֵה, Asar/esre are slightly changed. |
Now that we know how to do the complicated bit, let's move on to the simpler ones. |
Number |
30 |
shloshim - שְׁלוֹשִׁים |
40 |
arbaim - אַרְבַּעִים |
50 |
khamishim - חֲמִשִּׁים |
60 |
shishim - שִׁשִּׁים |
70 |
shivim - שִׁבְעִים |
80 |
shmonim - שְׁמוֹנִים |
90 |
tishim - תִּשְׁעִים |
Note that, from 20 onward, you only need to add the word וְ, Ve, which in English means "and," attached to a single number to form a combined dual number. The single number always follows the dual number (same as in English). |
Let's try with "fifty-three." "Fifty" is חֲמִשִּׁים, Khamishim and שְׁלוֹשָׁה/שָׁלוֹשׁ, Shlosha/shalosh is "three." Putting them together, we have חֲמִשִּׁים וּשְׁלוֹשָׁה/חֲמִשִּׁים וְשָׁלוֹשׁ, Khamishim ushlosha/Khamishim veshalosh or "fifty-three." Please note that, when we combine dual numbers with single numbers in Hebrew, we always add וְ, Ve before the single number, which in English means "and." Therefore, חֲמִשִּׁים וּשְׁלוֹשָׁה, khamishim ushlosha in English is actually "fifty and three." Let's break down this word and hear it once again, חֲמִשִּׁים וּשְׁלוֹשָׁה, khamishim ushlosha. |
Let's try now with double lucky number "seventy-seven." "Seventy" is שִׁבְעִים, Shivim and "seven" is שִׁבְעָה/שֶׁבַע, Shiv'ah/Sheva. Put them together and you have שִׁבְעִים וְשִׁבְעָה/שִׁבְעִים וְשֶׁבַע, Shivim veshiv'ah/Shivim vesheva. Let's break this word down and hear it once again, שִׁבְעִים וְשִׁבְעָה/שִׁבְעִים וְשֶׁבַע, Shivim veshiv'ah/Shivim vesheva. |
Finally, we have מֵאָה, Meah.100. |
To count from 100-119, you just need to add וְ, Ve to the 1-19 numbers that show after the מֵאָה, Meah, thus making …מֵאָה וְ, Meah ve.... And then add the units and the 1-19 numbers that you have just learned. In all the other numbers from 120 and higher, the וְ, Ve comes between the dual number and the single number. Thus, you don't need to use another וְ, Ve between the triple number and the dual number. Let's try with some examples. |
110 - מֵאָה וַעֲשָׂרָה/מֵאָה וְעֶשֶׂר, Meah veasara/Meah veeser |
198 - מֵאָה תִּשְׁעִים וּשְׁמוֹנֶה/מֵאָה תִּשְׁעִים וְשֶׁמּוֹנֶהָ Meah tishim veshmona/Meah tishim veshemone |
Ok, to close out today's lesson, we would like you to practice what you have just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it out loud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so !בְּהַצְלָחָה Behatzlacha! which means "Good luck!" in Hebrew. |
"Zero" - אֶפֶס, efes. |
"One" - אֶחָד/אַחַת, achat/echad. |
"Two" - שְׁנַיִם/שְׁתַּיִם, shtaim/shnaim. |
"Three" - שְׁלוֹשָׁה/שָׁלוֹשׁ, shalosh/shlosha. |
"Four" - אַרְבָּעָה/אַרְבַּע, arba/arbah. |
"Five" - חֲמִישָׁה/חָמֵש, khamesh/khamisha. |
"Six" - שִׁשָּׁה/שֵׁשׁ, shesh/shisha. |
"Seven" - שִׁבְעָה/שֵׁבַע, sheva/shiva'a. |
"Eight" - שְּמוֹנָה/שְּמוֹנֶה, shmone/shmona. |
"Nine" - תֵּשַׁע/תִּשְׁעָה, tesha/thisha'a. |
"Ten" - עֲשָׂרָה/עֶשֶׂר, asara/eser. |

"Thirty" - שְׁלוֹשִׁים, shloshim. |
"Forty" - אַרְבַּעִים, arbaim. |
"Fifty" - חֲמִשִּׁים, khamishim. |
"Sixty" - שִׁשִּׁים, shishim. |
"Seventy" - שִׁבְעִים, shiv'im. |
"Eighty" - שְׁמוֹנִים, shmonim. |
"Ninety" - תִּשְׁעִים, tishim. |
