Survival Phrases Lesson 51 - Explaining Allergies
In today's lesson, we'll cover a phrase that will be essential for those of you who are allergic to something. Letting other people know about your allergy is vital to a fun and healthy trip. In today's phrase, we'll go over "I'm allergic to something."
To start, we'll need something that we're allergic to. In some cases, allergies to peanuts can be extremely dangerous, so let's start from there.
In Hebrew, for a man, "I am allergic to peanuts" is אֲנִי אָלֶרְגִּי לְבּוֹטְנִים, Ani alergi lebotnim. Let's break it down by syllable, אֲנִי אָלֶרְגִּי לְבּוֹטְנִים, Ani alergi lebotnim. Now, let's hear it once again, אֲנִי אָלֶרְגִּי לְבּוֹטְנִים, Ani alergi lebotnim. The first word אֲנִי Ani means "I." Let's break down this word and hear it one more time, אֲנִי Ani. אָלֶרְגִּי alergi, which in English is "allergic," follows this. To recap here, we have אֲנִי אָלֶרְגִּי, Ani alergi. Literally, this means "I am allergic." Let's look at the last word לְבּוֹטְנִים, Lebotnim, which means "to peanuts." Let's break this word down and hear it once again, לְבּוֹטְנִים, Lebotnim. Now let's see the entire sentence together one more time, אֲנִי אָלֶרְגִּי לְבּוֹטְנִים, Ani alergi lebotnim. Literally, this means "I am allergic to peanuts."
For a woman, "I am allergic to peanuts" is אֲנִי אָלֶרְגִּית לְבּוֹטְנִים, Ani alergit lebotnim. Let's break it down by syllable, אֲנִי אָלֶרְגִּית לְבּוֹטְנִים, Ani alergit lebotnim. Now, let's hear it once again, אֲנִי אָלֶרְגִּית לְבּוֹטְנִים, Ani alergit lebotnim. The first word Ani means "I." Let's break down this word and hear it one more time, אֲנִי אָלֶרְגִּית , Ani alergit, which in English is "allergic," follows this. To recap here, we have אֲנִי אָלֶרְגִּית, Ani alergit. Literally, this means "I am allergic." Let's look at the last word לְבּוֹטְנִים, Lebotnim, which means "to peanuts." Let's break this word down and hear it once again, לְבּוֹטְנִים, Lebotnim. Now let's see the entire sentence together one more time, אֲנִי אָלֶרְגִּית לְבּוֹטְנִים, Ani alergit lebotnim. Literally, this means, "I am allergic to peanuts."
Please note that in Hebrew we attach prepositions to their nouns. Thus, we have the preposition לְ, Le "to" to the noun בּוֹטְנִים, Botnim "peanuts."
Now let's go over some other common allergies. Let's try shrimp. The Hebrew word for shrimp is Shrimps. Therefore, for a male speaker, "I am allergic to shrimp" is אֲנִי אָלֶרְגִּי לִשְׁרִימְפְּס, Ani alergi leshrimps. Let's break it down by syllable, אֲנִי אָלֶרְגִּי לִשְׁרִימְפְּס, Ani alergi leshrimps. Now, let's hear it once again, אֲנִי אָלֶרְגִּי לִשְׁרִימְפְּס, Ani alergi leshrimps.
For a female speaker, "I am allergic to shrimps" is אֲנִי אָלֶרְגִּית לִשְׁרִימְפְּס, Ani alergit leshrimps. Let's break it down by syllable, אֲנִי אָלֶרְגִּית לִשְׁרִימְפְּס, Ani alergit leshrimps. Now, let's hear it once again, אֲנִי אָלֶרְגִּית לִשְׁרִימְפְּס, Ani alergit leshrimps.
Please note that the only thing that changes here is לִשְׁרִימְפְּס, Leshrimps in place of לְבּוֹטְנִים, Lebotnim, while the rest is the same.
Let's try with eggs, which in Hebrew are בֵּיצִים, Beitsim. "I am allergic to eggs" for a male speaker is אֲנִי אָלֶרְגִּי לְבֵּיצִים, Ani alergi lebeitsim.
For a female speaker, this is אֲנִי אָלֶרְגִּית לְבֵּיצִים, Ani alergit lebeitsim.
Let's try with milk, which in Hebrew is חָלָב, Khalav."I am allergic to milk" for a male speaker is אֲנִי אָלֶרְגִּי לְחָלָב, Ani alergi lekhalav.
For a female speaker, this is אֲנִי אָלֶרְגִּית לְחָלָב, Ani alergit lekhalav.
In case you have to go to the doctor or to the hospital during your trip to Israel, you might be asked about your conditions. If you have allergies, make sure to get the right treatment.
In Hebrew, "Do you have any allergies?" for a male listener is ?יֵשׁ לְךָ אָלֶרְגִּיּוֹת לְמַשֶּׁהוּ, Yesh lekha alergyot lemashehu? Let's break it down by syllable, יֵשׁ לְךָ אָלֶרְגִּיּוֹת לְמַשֶּׁהוּ, Yesh lekha alergyot lemashehu? Now, let's hear it again, יֵשׁ לְךָ אָלֶרְגִּיּוֹת לְמַשֶּׁהוּ, Yesh lekha alergyot lemashehu? The first word יֵשׁ, Yesh means "have." Then, you have Lekha, which in English is "to you." אָלֶרְגִּיּוֹת, Alergyot, which means "allergies," follows next. Last, we have the word לְמַשֶּׁהוּ, Lemashehu, which in English means "to something." All together, we have יֵשׁ לְךָ אָלֶרְגִּיּוֹת לְמַשֶּׁהוּ, Yesh lekha alergyot lemashehu? This literally means, "Do you have any allergy?"
For a female listener, "Do you have any allergies?" is ?יֵשׁ לָךְ אָלֶרְגִּיּוֹת לְמַשֶּׁהוּ, Yesh lakh alergyot lemashehu? Let's break it down by syllable, ?יֵשׁ לָךְ אָלֶרְגִּיּוֹת לְמַשֶּׁהוּ, Yesh lakh alergyot lemashehu? Now, let's hear it again, ?יֵשׁ לָךְ אָלֶרְגִּיּוֹת לְמַשֶּׁהוּ, Yesh lakh alergyot lemashehu? The first word יֵשׁ, Yesh means "have." Then, you have לָךְ, lakh, which in English is "to you." אָלֶרְגִּיּוֹת, Alergyot, which means "allergies," follows next. Last, we have the word לְמַשֶּׁהוּ, Lemashehu, which in English means "to something." All together, we have ?יֵשׁ לָךְ אָלֶרְגִּיּוֹת לְמַשֶּׁהוּ, Yesh lakh alergyot lemashehu? This literally means, "Do you have any allergy?"
Ok, to close out today's lesson, we would like you to practice what you have just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it out loud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so !בְּהַצְלָחָה, Behatzlacha! which means "Good luck!" in Hebrew.
