Survival Phrases Lesson 52 - Introducing Yourself |
Whatever the reason for traveling to Israel, you won't leave the country without having met people. Therefore, it's necessary to learn how to introduce yourself and how to respond to people introducing themselves. |
Let's jump right in. |
In Hebrew, "How do you do?" when asking a male, is ?מַה שְּׁלוֹמְךָ, Ma shlomkha? Let's break it down by syllable and hear it one more time, ?מַה שְּׁלוֹמְךָ, Ma shlomkha? The first word מַה, Ma means, "what." Next, we have שְּׁלוֹמְךָ, shlomkha, which in English literally means, "your health." All together, we have ?מַה שְּׁלוֹמְךָ, Ma shlomkha? This literally means, "How do you do?" |
When asking a female, "How do you do?" it is ?מַה שְּׁלוֹמֵךְ, Ma shlomekh? Let's break it down by syllable and hear it one more time, ?מַה שְּׁלוֹמֵךְ, Ma shlomekh? The first word מַה, Ma means, "what." Next, we have שְּׁלוֹמֵךְ, shlomekh, which in English literally means, "your health." All together, we have ?מַה שְּׁלוֹמֵךְ, Ma shlomekh? This literally means, "How do you do?" |
After מַה שְּׁלוֹמְךָ, Ma shlomkha (for asking a male) or מַה שְּׁלוֹמֵךְ, Ma shlomekh (for asking a female), we will cover "My name is...," and we will use my name this time. Therefore, "My name is Ofer" is קוֹרְאִים לִי עֹפֶר, Kor'im li ofer. Let's break it down by syllable, קוֹרְאִים לִי עֹפֶר, Kor'im li ofer. Now, let's hear it one more time, קוֹרְאִים לִי עֹפֶר, Kor'im li ofer. The first word קוֹרְאִים, Kor'im means, "call," and we follow it with לִי, Li, which in English is "me/I." To recap here, we have קוֹרְאִים לִי, Kor'im li, which literally means, "I called." Then you have the name, in this case Ofer. All together, we have קוֹרְאִים לִי עֹפֶר, Kor'im li ofer, which literally means, "I called Ofer." |
After that, we will cover "Nice to meet you," which in Hebrew, when talking to a man, is נָעִים לְהַכּיר אוֹתְךָ, Naim lehakir otkha. Let's break it down and hear it one more time, לְהַכּיר אוֹתְךָ, Naim lehakir otkha. The first word נָעִים, Naim literally means "pleasure." Then, you have לְהַכּיר, Lehakir, which in English means "to get to know." Finally, you have otkha, which in English is "you." All together, we have נָעִים לְהַכּיר אוֹתְךָ, Naim lehakir otkha, which literally means "pleasure to get to know you." |
When talking to a woman, "Nice to meet you," is נָעִים לְהַכּיר אוֹתָךְ, Naim lehakir otakh. Let's break it down and hear it one more time, נָעִים לְהַכּיר אוֹתָךְ, Naim lehakir otakh. The first word נָעִים, Naim literally means, "pleasure." Then, you have לְהַכּיר, Lehakir, which in English means "to get to know." Finally, you have אוֹתָךְ, otakh, which in English is "you." All together, we have נָעִים לְהַכּיר אוֹתָךְ, Naim lehakir otakh, which literally means "pleasure to get to know you." |
Ok, to close out today's lesson, we would like you to practice what you have just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it out loud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so !בְּהַצְלָחָה, Behatzlacha! which means "Good luck!" in Hebrew. |
"How do you do?" (male listener) - ?מַה שְּׁלוֹמְךָ, Ma shlomkha? |
