| Survival Phrases Lesson 6 - Where Is the Bathroom in Israel? |
| In today's lesson, we'll cover an extremely important phrase, "Where is the bathroom?" |
| In Hebrew, "Where is the bathroom?" is ?ืึตืืคึนื ืึทืฉึผืึตืจืึผืชึดืื, Eifo hasherutim? Let's break it down by syllable, ?ืึตืืคึนื ืึทืฉึผืึตืจืึผืชึดืื, Eifo hasherutim? Now, let's hear it again, ?ืึตืืคึนื ืึทืฉึผืึตืจืึผืชึดืื, Eifo hasherutim? |
| Let's look at the components. The first word ืึตืืคึนื, Eifo means "where is." Let's break it down and hear it one more time, ืึตืืคึนื, Eifo. Next, we have ืึทืฉึผืึตืจืึผืชึดืื, Hasherutim. Please note the ืึท, Ha, which in Hebrew is the way to say "the," attached to the word ืฉึผืึตืจืึผืชึดืื, Sherutim, which means "toilet." Let's break this word down as well, ืึทืฉึผืึตืจืึผืชึดืื, Hasherutim. So, to recap, we have ?ืึตืืคึนื ืึทืฉึผืึตืจืึผืชึดืื, Eifo hasherutim? Literally, this means, "Where is the toilet?" |
| There is a more formal way to ask (but we rarely use it in Hebrew) "Where is the bathroom?" It is ?ืึตืืคึนื ืึทื ึผืึนืึดืึผืึผืช, Eifo hanokhiyut? This means "Where is the bathroom?" Let's break it down by syllable, ?ืึตืืคึนื ืึทื ึผืึนืึดืึผืึผืช, Eifo hanokhiyut? The word ืึตืืคึนื, Eifo means, "where is." Next, we have ืึทื ึผืึนืึดืึผืึผืช, Hanokhiyut, which is the way to say "bathroom" in formal Hebrew. |
| Now, when you finally get to the bathroom, there may be one last hurdle. In some instances, only Hebrew words are written on the doors! What to do? Well, you can stop by the website and find the words for "man" and "woman" there, find them inside the PDF, or, if you have an iPod, click the on the center button and you can find them there. The word for "men" is ืึผึฐืึธืจึดืื, Gvarim. The word for "women" is ื ึธืฉืึดืื, Nashim. Let's hear it once more, The word for "men" is ืึผึฐืึธืจึดืื, Gvarim. The word for "women" is ื ึธืฉืึดืื, Nashim |

| When traveling, there may not be so many public bathrooms for tourists to use. This means your best option is to stop at either a cafรฉ or a restaurant to use their bathrooms. Understandably, cafรฉ owners aren't too keen on having people stop in just to use their bathroom. So, to be polite, you might buy a bottle of water or order a coffee before asking ืึถืคึฐืฉืึธืจ ืึฐืึดืฉืึฐืชึผึทืึผึตืฉื ืึผึทืฉึผืึตืจืึผืชึดืื, Efshar lehishtamesh basherutim? This last phrase means, "May I use the bathroom?" Of course, it will be nicer if you add ืึผึฐืึทืงึผึธืฉืึธื, Bevakasha, which means "please," thus becoming ?ืึถืคึฐืฉืึธืจ ืึฐืึดืฉืึฐืชึผึทืึผึตืฉื ืึผึทืฉึผืึตืจืึผืชึดืื, Efshar lehishtamesh basherutim bevakasha? |

| Ok, to close out today's lesson, we would like you to practice what you have just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it out loud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so !ืึผึฐืึทืฆึฐืึธืึธื, Behatzlacha! which means "Good luck!" in Hebrew. |

The word ืฉืจืืชืื is used both for "services" and for "toilets". ื ืืืืืช has an older connotation - it's not very common to hear nowadays.
@Mike - "Efshar leishtamesh basherutim?" is properly translated as "May I use in the bathroom?". We don't say "Efshar leishtamesh hasherutim?" as we don't formulate Hebrew according to English... the preposition of "to use" (ืืืฉืชืืฉ) is "be" not "ha".

"Eifo hasherutim?" is translated to "Where is the bathroom?" "Efshar leishtamesh basherutim?" is translated to "May I use the bathroom?" If "ba" means "in the" and "ha" means "the" why aren't we saying "Efshar leishtamesh hasherutim?" In other words, why isn't "Efshar leishtamesh basherutim?" translated to "May I use in the bathroom?"
Also, do the two words for bathroom-services and nochhiot have different connotations? Is one more formal? i.e. in English we can say toilet or commode, but commode is a higher language. Thanks in advance for your explanation.
