Bayit vs. Beit

Hello,

I have a question about the Hebrew word "בית". Sometimes I heard it pronounced as beit (like in בית המקדש) and other times as bayit (almost like the English "bite"). How can I tell when I should use these different pronunciations of בית?

The common way to pronounce "בית -ה" is "Beyt" - as in "ate the cake"
